The stage of learning basic biochemistry begins with studying the living molecules distributed in the cell along its various organelles. Thus, we start early to learn about the biochemical components of the cell membranes made up of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates, before moving on to the molecules that carry genetic information (nucleic acids).

The third semester (S3) is intended for studying 1/ biomolecule structures (structural biochemistry) including carbohydrates (sugars), lipids (fats), proteins and nucleic acids, 2/ and biochemistry techniques (separation and analysis) often used in biochemistry (chromatography, electrophoresis, etc.).

learning the function of biomolecules at the level of metabolism (catabolism, anabolism) passes through the understanding of their properties (hydrophobicity, ionicity, ...) which mostly remain linked to their three-dimensional structures (stereostructure).

Semester 3. Separation and analysis techniques in Biochemistry


Separating methods in biochemistry depend on the physico-chemical properties of molecules such as weight, shape, ionization, and polarity. Thus, the electrophoresis technique relies mainly on the ionic nature, size (weight) and shape properties of the biomolecules. During the separation process, the size of the particles interferes with the the electric charge. Chromatography is based on exploiting the polarity, ionic properties, size and shape of molecules. Examples of training in biochemistry: 1. Aminoacid titration, 2. Chromatography of amino acids, such as proline, leucine and aspartic acid, 3. Lipid Separation (in sunflower) sunflower, using thin-layer chromatography and determination of oil numbers, such as acidity index and saponification index, 4. Identification and quantification of carbohydrates, 5. Separation of proteins by electrophoresis.

Biochemistry of reactions and metabolism. Once you know the structures and properties of biomolecules, you can find out how they interact in a healthy or sick organism. The process of metabolism envolves macromolecules called enzymes. Knowing how enzymes work makes it possible to develop intervention strategies to prevent the triggering of specific metabolic chains or modify the release of a harmful by-product. This applies to inhibitors, which can be reversible or irreversible (suicidal) inhibitors that permanently eliminate enzyme function.

Examples of the reversible inhibitors:

Examples of practical work in metabolic biochemistry:
1. Extraction and kinetic study of yeast invertase, an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of sucrose to release fructose (in addition to glucose),
2. Extraction and study of glucose-6-phosphatase from rabbit liver. It is an enzyme that allows gluconeogenesis (glucose biosynthesis) during fasting.

Semester 5. Molecular biology

The fifth semester (S5) is dedicated to molecular biology (DNA replication, transcription, translation, genetic engineering). Applied works relate to the purification of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in plants or bacteria with its hydrolysis and its separation by electrophoresis on agarose gel.

Semester 6. Differents Options and Final Project

The sixth semester (S6) involves differents scientific paths, such as plant productions, environmental management, animal production, ecology, etc. This semester culminates in the Project of End Studies (PFE).
